Running man
Smart technology can help justice be done. In April 2015, Walter Scott, a 50-year-old man, was fatally shot by policeman Michael Slager, in South Carolina, USA. Slager had stopped Scott for a non-functioning brake light. Eyewitness video surfaced showing the officer shooting Scott from behind while Scott was fleeing through a neighbourhood park. The images contradicted Slager's report of the incident. In December 2017, Slager was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with the judge determining an underlying offense of second degree murder. It was a rare finding against the police, solidified by Feidin Santana’s video of the incident recorded on his phone. Santana shared the video with Scott's family through an activist of Black Lives Matter and later with the news media. The shooting, believed to be racially motivated, generated widespread protests that seeded and deepened the Black Lives Matter movement.
I painted this series, inspired by the Santana’s original video and stills, in solidarity with the movement and people experiencing racial injustice everywhere.
